This December, we’ll whisk our audiences to the Balkan Peninsula and immerse them in the vibrant colors, music, dances, & stories of this fascinating region. The music from these Slavic nations have distinct harmonic and rhythmic traditions. We can’t wait to share these joyous, energetic, and mysterious sounds with our audiences.
While The Christmas Revels uses professional performers, our wonderful auditioned volunteer choruses (adult and children) are the heart of the production. Although a number of singers from previous shows return to audition for new shows, we value the presence of new voices and new faces in our cast so every year we audition each cast anew. People from all cultural backgrounds, races, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
Please read all the information here and look carefully at the rehearsal schedule before calling or emailing for an audition appointment. Performances are Dec 15 (2pm & 7:30pm); Dec 16 (1pm & 5:30pm); Dec 18 (7:30pm), Dec 19 (7:30). Here is the Rehearsal schedule.
The expectation is that you are at all the rehearsals (and that you arrive on time). If it looks like you cannot meet that expectation, then maybe wait and audition another year when our schedule is a better fit with yours. A high level of commitment from the whole cast is what makes a high quality production.
Audition times: Friday, May 3 (4:30 – 8pm) & Saturday, May 4 (10am – 2:30pm) at First United Methodist Church (621 Tacoma Ave, S, Tacoma 98402).
Audition appointments: If the rehearsal schedule works for you, email or call the Revels office to schedule your audition appointment. Give us your name, phone number and preference for time and date, if you have one. Feel free to call or email with questions. 253-756-1804 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Expectations and General Information:
Our Criteria: Revels cast members are people who love to sing, who sing vigorously and accurately with a good sense of rhythm and who can hold their own part in a choral context. Some are experienced choral singers, some are not. Sight-reading is not necessary, but a good ear and the ability to memorize music and text are. We look for a variety of ages, sizes and personalities to create a realistic “village” on stage. We require a serious commitment to the rehearsal and performance schedule .
We can’t stress this enough – performing in The Christmas Revels is a big commitment. Rehearsals start in September and include weekly Tuesday night rehearsals and FIVE all-day Saturday rehearsals and several Sunday afternoon rehearsals. In December there are 8 weeknight rehearsals before the show opens. The Christmas Revels runs for 6 performances over 5 days. Please look at the dates and make sure you can commit to the schedule – none of the rehearsals are optional.
For Your Audition:
For the adult audition we ask that you come ready to sing a short song of your choice without accompaniment. Your selection can be from any era or genre but because of the kind of music we present in The Christmas Revels, a traditional song or carol is recommended. Sing something you know well. The more comfortable you are with your song, the less nerves will hinder you. In the interest of time, we may stop you after a verse or two rather than hear the whole song.
We schedule groups of 3 adults in 15-minute blocks. During your audition you will sing your prepared song. We may also ask you to sing some scales to get an idea of your vocal range. We will then teach a simple round for you to sing with the others in your group.
You may also be asked to read something and/or join others in some simple folk dance steps.
Rehearsals are at First United Methodist Church of Tacoma (621 Tacoma Ave S, Tacoma, WA 98402) until we move into the Rialto Theater on December 9.
